01 - Master Familiarisation

Familiarisation checklist for the Master to ensure they are fully aware of the yacht's operational protocols.

Checklist

On arrival / embarkation of a new captain on board, it is the former Captain’s responsibility to ensure that the new captain is immediately familiarised and briefed on the following items.

01Working language check
02Has agreed and signed Master’s job description, including the specific authority, duties and responsibilities of the Master.
03Have read and understood Safety Management Company’s policies and agree these will be posted for the benefit of the crew.
04Understands a key role of the Master is ensuring implementation of the SMS, promoting reporting and development of safe working practices aboard.
05Understands the importance of risk assessment, permits to work, drills, safety meetings and the hours of rest requirements.
06Have sighted Master’s standing orders and understand an approved version will be implemented aboard.
07Understands there are specific statutory obligations appropriate to the size and type of yacht the Master is required to comply with to the extent they apply to the yacht.
08Understands there are International Conventions including but not limited to SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW and MLC that shall be complied with to the extent they apply to the yacht.
09Knowledge of Cayman Islands Law and Procedures (LAP): LAP Manual, CI Yachtmaster’s Handbook
10Understands if the yacht’s certification lapses the insurance may be invalid.
11Has agreed to appoint the role of Safety Officer aboard to a suitably experienced crew member
12Has agreed to appoint the role of SSO to suitably qualified crew member
13Sighted the ship’s security plan and is aware of Master’s/SSO’s responsibilities
14Understands the responsibility of reporting of the financial activity
15Understands the importance of crew evaluation and appraisal
